Martin Carthy: November 28th 2008
We have seen Martin Carthy perform in cooperation with other performers or solo, but it is very apparent that Martin is as equally comfortable in the intimate atmosphere of the folk club as he is on the concert platform. He has a genuine interest in l istening, as he did when he remained on stage to listen to the songs and tales of Louis Killen at the Roscoe venue in Leeds. He always listens to the singers in the clubs wherever he is performing. I asked him about this last year. His reply came without the slightest hesitation: ‘I listen in case I miss out on a good singer or a worthwhile song’.
A regular guest at the Grove, and we are always very full on this particular night! Tickets go on sale well in advance.

‘Martin Carthy is possible the greatest folksinger in the world, a living legend and a highly respected guitar player. His individual and sensitive style of guitar playing allows the words of the songs to be conveyed with ease to a spellbound audience. Martin believes the words of the songs are of the utmost importance, and his delivery confirms this.’ Unknown author

Singer of the Year
For more than 30 years Martin Carthy has been the most visible, versatile and, at times, controversial figure in English folk music. Whether in the folk club, on the concert stage or in a TV studio, there are few roles he has not played, from ballad singer to folk-rock guitarist. While his settings of traditional songs with guitar have influenced a generation of performers, he is also an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2002
Martin Carthy’s documentary, English Roots was shown on Friday 23rd July on BBC2 at 11.35pm in the series Originals.
Reviews
Martin Carthy’s solo album, Waiting For Angels was produced by Eliza Carthy and Ben Ivitsky and was released by Topic Records in late September 2004. This much anticipated album included a diverse and inspired collection of tunes and songs, ranging from 'Waiting for Angels' and 'A Ship Called Old England' to the haunting 'Harry Lime Theme' from The Third Man. There are guest appearances from cellist Christine Hanson, trumpeter Toby Shippey of Salsa Celtica and Donald Hay on drums and percussion. Also featured are Martin Simpson and Paul Sartin.
