Tim Laycock: June 4th 2004

Tim rang up from Oxford en route to the club ... “I am in a traffic jam and won’t get to The Grove until 10 o’clock.”

After 8 hours on the road, a few minutes to take up his concertina and draw up a stool, he was straight into song in the midst of which was a tall story. And so he sang through the evening accompanying himself deftly on the English concertina - on a tour of English traditional song sung at its best, a style of singing with restrained passion, the English way.

After a short break Tim continued and treated us to a momentous night.

It was nearly midnight before he wound up the evening, and not before treating us to his piece de la resistance where he mimics the tolling of church bells by holding his concertina at arms length and sweeping in great circular arcs as he continues to play. The result is a truly magical sound that brought this evening to a fitting close.
