Monkey’s Fist

Monkey's Fist have featured before at the Grove, and their enthusiasm for singing the songs comes over tho the audience who join in heartily with the choruses.

There is a new lineup but with Alan Collier and Colin Devey remaining in anchor position you might say.

John Horsey and Steve Flude have joined them. They have made their appearance at a FIRST FRIDAY SING on a couple of occasions, and each of the group drop in from time to time - friends of the Grove!

Monkey’s Fist is a shanty band formed in November 2000 to perform maritime music. The name is taken from the knot tied at the end of heaving lines, which together with instructions for tying the knot, is depicted on the shirts worn by the band members.

From a variety of formats in the early stages, the band finally evolved into a four-man line up, gaining a considerable following in their inaugural year. The band has performed at various folk clubs and festivals in the Yorkshire area, notably Hull Shanty Festival, the Captain Cook Maritime Festival and Robin Hoods Bay Folk Club, and other venues, which have included private functions, charity events, and, would you believe it, a wedding.

Since then the band's reputation has grown steadily, with performances at such national events as Lancaster Maritime Festival and Maryport, and recording their debut CD "First Line Ashore" has served to enhance the group's popularity. Now, Monkey’s Fist is fast becoming a household name in the world of maritime music.

The sound is full and solid, with a tightness resulting from a good understanding of their musical capabilities, and an ever-widening repertoire of shanties and songs of the sea. There is a strong thread of audience participation - we much prefer you to sing with us - combined with a sense of fun and enjoyment, which emanates from every Monkey's Fist performance.
